UW–Madison: a new college for computing—and a Year of AI for the Wisconsin Idea
On July 1, 2026, the University of Wisconsin–Madison launched the College of Computing & Artificial Intelligence—its first new school or college in more than forty years—under founding dean Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau. The same year is designated the campuswide Year of AI Readiness and Competency, building on RISE-AI faculty and infrastructure investment. College, not just a center
CAI unites Computer Sciences, the Information School, and Statistics—more than 100 faculty and roughly 5,000 students—under one college with plans for fifty new faculty hires and major philanthropic plus institutional investment. The Year of AI Readiness Working Group, co-chaired by the CIO and an interim Letters & Science dean, is charged with plain-language acceptable-use guidance, policy review, role-based literacy training, and governance recommendations that outlast 2026.
