USC: an AI Institute built for the Southeast and the state
The University of South Carolina’s Artificial Intelligence Institute (AII@USC) began as a university Excellence Initiative in 2018—facilities, core faculty, and infrastructure under founding director Amit Sheth—and moved into Phase 2 under Homayoun Valafar to connect the institute with statewide research and training needs. The brief spans core AI topics, interdisciplinary translation, certificates and degrees, and commercialization for South Carolina’s economy. For KFN, Columbia is Campus Future for the state’s public research AI flagship.

Excellence Initiative DNA
AII@USC was never a boutique lab: it was funded to make USC a Southeast AI leader with patents, SBIR/STTR, industry projects, and social-good/health applications beside NLP and vision research.
Phase 2: statewide constituency
Valafar’s phase emphasizes engaging USC colleges and South Carolina partners so training and research match state demand—not only Columbia campus prestige.
