Boston University’s Charles River Campus sits between Kenmore and the Back Bay—close enough to Boston’s hospitals, media, and transit spine that campus research rarely stays theoretical. The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) and the Rafik Hariri Institute for Computing treat AI as a tool that remakes other disciplines. For KFN, BU matters because it is a large urban research university arguing that climate prediction, coastal risk, and city ecosystems are computing problems as much as Earth-science problems.

CDS as convergent infrastructure

Associate Provost for Computing and Data Sciences Azer Bestavros has described CDS as less about computer science in isolation and more about how computing transforms other fields. That framing shows up in faculty appointments that span CDS and Earth & Environment—and in research groups that treat huge climate datasets as the same class of problem as machine-learning systems: pattern finding under uncertainty, with trustworthiness as a first-class requirement.

AI for climate on day-to-decade timescales

Elizabeth “Libby” Barnes, BU’s inaugural Dalton Family Chair in Environmental Data Science & Sustainability, joined as a joint professor in CDS and Earth & Environment. Her group uses deep learning and climate emulators to improve predictions from days to decades—hurricane outlooks across seasons and years, multiyear climate analogs, and work tying extreme weather to trade and supply-chain ripple effects. Campus coverage in 2026 highlighted ACE2-style emulators and subseasonal cyclone risk tools. For a coastal city that already lives with flooding, heat, and insurance pressure, that research is civic infrastructure.

The Hariri Institute’s Environmental Forecasting Focused Research Program pushes the same idea further: shared cyberinfrastructure for forecasts across tropical infectious disease, urban trees and microbes, and coastal biogeochemistry. BU is trying to own the convergent niche where AI, statistics, ecology, and Earth science meet.

BU students and labs share Boston’s housing market, MBTA reliability, and hospital employment corridors with neighbors at Northeastern, Harvard, and MIT. The difference is BU’s scale as a private research university woven into the city’s commercial spine—Comm Ave is not a gated science park. When CDS grows, Boston feels it in transit loads and lab demand as much as in papers.
