Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is the university whose name still travels farther than its Unter den Linden address: the Humboldtian idea that research and teaching belong together. In 2026 that idea is also institutional machinery. HU is a partner in the Berlin University Alliance—with Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin—Germany’s first University Consortium of Excellence. On 11 March 2026 the Excellence Commission confirmed continued funding for 2027–2033 under “Beyond Boundaries: A Joint Agenda for Berlin as an Open Knowledge and Innovation Space.” For KFN, the story is not a single campus brand. It is how Berlin’s historic research university works inside a citywide system.

From Crossing Boundaries to Beyond Boundaries

The Berlin University Alliance’s first Excellence concept was “Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment,” with funding from November 2019. The second phase language is sharper: Berlin as an open knowledge and innovation space, with grand challenges, knowledge exchange, research quality, talent pipelines, and shared resources treated as citywide infrastructure. Five Clusters of Excellence across the alliance partners received funding from 2026—another reminder that German excellence policy now rewards consortia as much as solitary flagships.

HU President Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal has framed the alliance as the scale at which global challenges become solvable: no single university can overcome them alone. That is also a Berlin argument. The capital’s research density—universities, Charité, institutes, startups—only compounds if libraries, labs, career paths, and data services are shared rather than duplicated behind four walls.

Academic freedom as operating condition

Alliance communications in 2026 have put academic freedom and research culture on the public agenda—podcasts, conferences, and close-ups on clusters such as SCRIPTS studying liberal systems under pressure. For a university named for Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, that is not nostalgia. It is a claim that Berlin’s next decade of AI, climate, and geopolitical research only works if researchers can still ask hard questions in public.

HU’s official site currently sits behind aggressive bot protections—ironic for an “open knowledge” agenda, and a small symbol of how hard it has become to keep public research interfaces open while under scraper load. The substance still travels through the alliance: integrated career spaces, teaching and learning collaboration, internationalization, and diversity commitments that treat Berlin as one research labor market.

What Berlin asks of its historic campus

Outside Germany, Humboldt is a metaphor. In Mitte and Adlershof it is rents, lab access, and competition with TU Berlin’s engineering culture and FU’s Dahlem research village. The alliance model is Berlin’s answer to that fragmentation: keep distinctive campus identities while pooling excellence funding and infrastructures.

That is why HU belongs beside TU Berlin in KFN’s Germany series. One campus carries the classical research-university myth; the other carries technical scale; together with FU and Charité they are betting that a consortium can outcompete solitary excellence elsewhere in Germany.

What to watch next

Watch how “Beyond Boundaries” funding (2027–2033) shows up as shared services students and researchers can actually use. Watch whether academic-freedom framing becomes concrete protection for at-risk scholars and contested research. And watch whether Berlin’s open-knowledge pitch survives housing costs and political pressure on universities. Humboldt will keep being invoked as an idea. The longer story is whether the alliance makes that idea operational across a whole capital.
