Cairo University began as a national project—opened 21 December 1908 after years of advocacy by figures including Mustafa Kamil, Muhammad Abduh, and Saad Zaghloul—and became a state university in 1925. On the Giza campus that still defines Egypt’s public higher-education skyline, faculty histories describe on the order of 22 faculties and institutes, roughly 155,000 students, thousands of faculty, about 150 research centres and business units, student hospital and press, and a Khartoum branch after Upper Egypt branches became independent universities. From private Egyptian University to national system

Early lectures rented halls and advertised in the press; the governmental Egyptian University of 1925 opened with Arts, Science, Medicine, and Law, later absorbing engineering, agriculture, commerce, and veterinary schools. Renamed for King Fuad I and then Cairo University after 1953, it became the template other Egyptian public universities measured themselves against.
